Carin Clonda

Carin Clonda is a former Australian and World ranked professional squash player.
Clonda was born on 01 March, 1961 in Sydney to an Estonian mother and Romanian father. Aged 13 she started playing squash to combat asthma and two years later won the Australian Under-16 title.
In 1978 she won the NSW and Australian Junior Women's Championships, In January 1979 she won and is still the only Australian to have won the British Junior Women's Open. A remarkable event from starting at the age of 13 years and winning the most sort after trophies of the time at only 17 years of age, from beginner to being the best Women's Junior player in the World, as at that time there was no World Championship for the Women's under 19, this did not commence till 1981 or 1983.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Clonda profile )
Remarkably she continued to compete on the important British circuit against the advice of doctors that the British weather conditions could prove fatal if she continued to play. Clonda carried a respiratory machine around with her and remained a leading player. Represented Australia in the 1983 Women's World Team Squash Championships and became a world team champion and reached the semi finals of the 1983 Women's World Open Squash Championship, hosted in Perth, Australia.
She reached her highest world ranking at the age of 22 years in 1983, three years after health issues forced her from squash in her last year of juniors, and remained in the top 10 for a number of years. During 1983 the Women's Professional Squash Players Association (WISPA) was born, with Clonda being a founder member, she went on to lead the organization from 1985 - 1989.
In 1989, Clonda underwent major lower back surgery, a spinal fusion, which could have seen her paralysed, but she come back in 1990 to compete in the 1990 World Women's Open in her home town of Sydney.
Clonda was then plagued with health issues, Chronic Fatigue, Tumour, respiratory infections and life threatening Pneumonia's, ruptured lung amongst them.
During the mid 1990's she pretty much retired from squash again, only to be become involved again when she agreed to become involved in the Sydney 2002 Gaygames, where she become the Squash event Manager, running the highly successful squash Event as well as winning the Silver in the Women's Open. In 2007 at the age of 47 she played in the Australian Closed and got to the quarter-finals after beating some of Australia's top 20 players half her age. In 2009 she underwent left and right hip replacements. After much rehabilitation, she continues to play squash.
